Born a Farmer's son from Appleby in Westmorland, John left school at 15 years old and by 18 became a butcher manager for what was then known as Fine Fare, at the time the largest supermarket group going.By the age of 23 John became his own boss opening his butcher's shop here in Ferryhill and has now being established 33 years winning numerous awards for pork pies, 5 times winner in Darlington & District and most recently became Supreme Champions for the Northern Council of Butchers Association at Durham City and also York in 2004/5 John also has many awards for the vast array of various homemade sausages he has available including lamb & mint...Beef & ale... Mediteranean...Pork & Black pudding...Durham...and last but not least westmorland named after his farm home in Appleby. I had the privelege to sample these sausages and I can confirm they are the best sausages I have ever tasted the Westmorland being from a recipe John remembered from his mother and he re-created it.John also does a great deal for charity, Muscular Dystrophy! and has 7 times ran the Great North Run, he gives away bones and ask's for donations to the charity box in return.he also tells me he holds a charity "Duck Races" I was intrigued as to how he did this and I visualised all sorts of pandemoninmum for a few minutes.... till he told me that they were plastic ducks and they stuck a number on the rear end of the duck and then through them in the river the winner being the first one pulled out some miles further down.
